The gene encodes protein which is a member of the forkhead/winged-helix family of transcriptional regulators (Ref 2, 3). It is shown that in human breast and colon cancer cells, expression of FOXP3 is regulated by p53 in response to the DNA damage. FOXP3 is selectively expressed by a subset of CD4+ T cells, known as T regulatory (Treg) cells, which suppress effector T-cell function in response to self or foreign antigens.
