ERK1 and ERK 2 are activated by growth factors, hormones and phorbol esters. Phosphorylation of ERK occurs through a series of events which include phosphorylations by kinases which activate other kinases and finally bring about the phosphorylation of erk. Activated ERK plays a role in control of cell proliferation, cell differentiation, and regulation of the cytoskeleton.
