The protein is also made in the small intestine and is regulated by the dietary intake of lipids. It is also the major constituent of the human high density lipoprotein (HDL) and plays an important role in the metabolic and transport functions of lipoproteins of the serum. The protein acts as an activator for the enzyme lecithin cholesterol acyl transferase which converts cholesterol to cholesteryl esters.
