Histone H3 undergoes many post-translational modifications compared to other histones, such as phosphorylation, acetylation, multiple methylation, ubiquitination and ADP-ribosylation. Reversible acetylation occurs on N-terminal lysine residues–acetylation removes positive charges from the histones, thereby weakening their interaction with the phosphate backbone of DNA, thus transforming chromatin into a more relaxed structure that is associated with greater levels of gene transcription.
