In humans, it is encoded by the TP53 gene and functions as a tumor suppressor by preventing genome mutaions. P53 interacts with other proteins involved in cell cycle reguation, such as p300 and p21. It has been suggested that post-translational modification of p53 by acetylation may be required for p53 activation; for example, acetylated p53 has a longer half-life due to a significant decrease in its ubiquitination.
