Its ability to stimulate mitogenesis, matrix invasion, and cell motility gives it a prominent role in tissue regeneration, angiogenesis, and tumorogenesis. HGF is located on chromosome 7 in humans and is a member of the plasminogen subfamily of S1 peptidases; however, it lacks any apparent protease activity. Secreted by mesenchymal cells, an initally inactive HGF precursor and then cleaved by serine proteases to produce a 69-kDa alpha-chain and 34-kDa beta-chain.
