Members of the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family are peptidases involved in the normal physiological breakdown of extracellular matrix during processes such as embryonic development, reproduction, morphogenesis and tissue remodeling; however, when overexpressed they cause pathologies such as arthritis and metastasis in cancer progression. Most MMPs are released as inactive protoproteins, which are activated by cleavages carried out by furin or tissue or plasma proteinases (2). MMP10 degrades fibronectin, gelatin type I, III, IV and V and collagen.
