A combination of purified comitogenic monoclonal antibodies for use as a T-lymphocyte activation control.The CD2 molecule is an Mr 50-kDa human lymphocyte antigen. At least three different functional epitopes of CD2 have been defined. One epitope (recognized by clone S5.2) is the sheep red blood cell (SRBC) receptor. The other two epitopes, CD2 and CD2R, are binding sites for monoclonal antibodies that, when used together, deliver signals for polyclonal T-lymphocyte activation.The CD2 epitope recognized by clone L303.1 is expressed on essentially all resting and activated T lymphocytes and on a subset of resting and activated NK lymphocytes. The CD2R epitope recognized by clone L304.1 is expressed at lower levels on resting T cells. Upon activation, CD2R becomes more accessible to antibodies, most likely due to a conformational change.
