PD-1 functions as an immunoreceptor that is activated by the PD-L1 ligand. PD-1 is expressed on the surface of activated T- and B-cells. It plays an inhibitory role on T-cell function, and may block T-cell—mediated events such as the proliferation of lymphocytes and the secretion of cytokines. PD-1 may therefore negatively regulate immune responses, and disruption of PD-1 function may affect tolerance.
