This occurs either though association with a nuclear localization signal (NLS) and an adapter protein , such as an importin-alpha subunit, which which binds to nuclear, or directly where the protein acts as autonomous nuclear transport receptor. Import of macromolecules containing a NLS requires a heterodimer of importin alpha and beta subunits also called as karyopherins.
