Podocalyxin protein is expressed on the surface of undifferentiated human embryonic stem cells. Originally, the protein was characterized as a marker for vasculature and podocytes, but expression has since been observed in platelets, hematopoietic precursor cells and mesothelial cells from the coelmic cavity lining. Studies have outlined two distinct and seemingly adverse roles for this protein; it acts as an anti-adhesion molecule in renal glomerulae podocytes, but functions as an adhesion molecule within vasculature on high endothelial venules. Podocalyxin expression has been implicated in the development of aggressive cancers, beta catenin signaling, angiogenisis, and both myeloid and acute lymphoblastic leukemias.
