View All» Background Information: RGS12 is a protein from the “regulators of G-protein signaling” protein family or RGS. This family of proteins is known to negatively regulate specific G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) signals. RGS12 has been shown to increase GTPase activity for G-protein α subunits in order to inhibit signal transduction. Due to the alternative splice variants of the RGS12 gene, there are four known isoforms of the protein. The largest of the isoforms are found in most tissues but are most highly expressed in ovary, spleen, testis, caudate nucleus and cerebellum. The smaller isoforms are expressed in prostate, kidney, thymus and brain. Isoform 3 is specific to brain. It is also thought that RGS12 may have a role in tumorigenesis.
