Members of the atypical PKC subfamily are calcium-independent and do not require phosphatidylserine, diacylglycerol (DAG), or exogenous phorbol esters for activation. They have been shown to serve as convergent downstream targets for the PI 3-kinase and TC10 signaling pathways and can regulate NF-kappa B activation during inflammation and cell survival signaling.
