These proteins are structurally related to the glycosylhydrolase family 18, but lack enzymatic activity. It is secreted by synovial fibroblasts, chondrocytes, and TGF beta/IL-4-stimulated monocyte-derived macrophages. CHI3L2 expression in synovium correlates with osteoarthritic cartilage degeneration, and is a potential biomarker for osteoarthritis.
