It is generated from a common precursor that is cleaved to form two disulfide-linked subunits. Clusterin is believed to function as a unique type of heat shock protein, presumably protecting extracellular molecules. Alternative splicing will also generate a truncated form of Clusterin that is pro-apoptotic. Thus, its function(s) may be context-dependent.
