GABA (A) receptors are pentameric chloride channels composed of subunits belonging to different homology classes, i.e. α, β, γ, δ, θ, ε, π, and act as receptors for GABA, a crucial inhibitory neurotransmitter localized within the brain. GABA (A) gamma 2 subunit consists of 5 cysteine residues and carries the binding site for benzodiazepine. The subunit functions to promote receptor maintenance and clustering at the synapse, interacts with GABA receptor associated proteins such as GODZ and GABAWRAP, affects GABA (A) receptor conductance and kinetics, and is a contributing component to receptors participating in both phasic and tonic inhibition.
