Notch signaling is important in cell to cell communication which allows "a differentiating cell to suppress the same differentiation fate in a neighboring cell (the receiving cell). This ensures that the correct number of cells are distributed to distinct cell fates." When RBP-jk is not associated with Notch proteins, it acts as a transcriptional repressor.
