Ufc1 is a 116 amino acid (aa) protein with a predicted molecular weight of 19 kDa. Human Ufc1 exhibits 97% and 98% aa identity to its mouse and rat orthologs, respectively. The process of attaching Ufm1 to target proteins is termed ufmylation. It is thought to occur in a manner analogous to the ubiquitin system, including stepwise enzymatic reactions involving Ubiquitin-activating (E1)-, Ubiquiting-conjugating (E2)-, and Ubiquitin Ligase (E3)-like enzymes.
