View All» Background Information: Endothelial cell-selective adhesion molecule (ESAM or ESAM1) is a relatively novel cell adhesion protein considered to be a transmembrane type 1 glycoprotein. Studies have shown ESAM to play a regulatory role in the calcium-independent and homophilic adhesion of expressing cells. ESAM expression is highest in heart and lung tissue, and weakest in skin and kidney. Expression is exclusive to vascular endothelial cells, megakaryocytes and activated platelets.
