The antiserum stains nerve fibers and cell bodies in untreated animals. The staining pattern for the immunoreactive cell bodies obtained with the GABAB-R2 receptor antiserum corresponds to the pattern described using in situ hybridization with probes to rat GABAB-R2 receptor mRNA (Durkin et al., 1999). Strong GABAB-R2 receptor immunoreactivity is e.g. demonstrated in the Purkinje cells of the cerebellum, in the cerebral cortex, in the medial habelulae, in the spinal cord and in the brainstem. In individual Purkinje neurons, the immunoreactivity is preferentially observed in the periphery of the cells, most likely corresponding to the plasma membrane, but also in the entire dendritic tree extending into the molecular cell layer of the cerebellum.
