These proteins are structurally related to the glycosylhydrolase family 18, but lack enzymatic activity. CHI3L1 is expressed by chondrocytes, synovial cells, macrophages and neutrophils. It has been found to play a role in down-regulating cytokine-induced inflammatory responses.
