View All» Background Information: Leader binding protein-1a (LBP-1a) also known as Upstream-binding protein 1, and UBP1 functions as a transcriptional activator in a promoter context-dependent manner. This protein is known to activate a number of genes related to cell growth and differentiation. LBP-1 proteins have been shown to form dimmers. In cultured cells, LBP-1a and LSF (a.k.a. LBP-1c) are localized in the cytoplasm, but translocate into the nucleus after forming heterodimers with LBP-1b, a splicing variant of LBP-1a with an intrinsic nuclear localization signal (NLS). Other studies have shown that LBP-1a binds strongly to sequences around the HIV-1 initiation site and can repress HIV-1 transcription by inhibiting the binding of TFIID to the TATA-box.
