Inorganic arsenic compounds are largely metabolized via repetitive reduction and methylation in the liver to form metabolites that can be excreted in the urine as methylated arsenicals, such as monomethylarsonic acid and dimethylarsinic acid. Arsinite methyltransferase (EC 2.1.1.137) catalyzes the transfer of a methyl group form S-adenosyl methionine (SAM; AdoMet) to produce methylated and dimethylated arsenicals. It is known to methylate arsenite to form methylarsonate, Me-AsO3H2, which is then reduced by methylarsonate reductase to methylarsonite (Me-As(OH)2). Methylarsonite is also a substrate and it is converted into the much less toxic compound dimethylarsinate( Me2As(O)-OH).
