Like its other family members, Fibroblast growth factor-9 (FGF-9) is secreted from cells; however, it is different in that it does not contain a recognizable signal sequence. Also known as Glia-activating factor (GAF), FGF-9 is glycosylated, mildly hydrophobic, and secreted from glioma cells. It is suggested to play a critical role in myoblast migration, glial cell growth, glial differentiation, gliosis during repair and regeneration of brain tissue after damage, and in the survival of neuronal cells and glial tumors. Mice lacking the homolog gene displayed a male-to-female sex reversal phenotype, which suggested a role in testicular embryogenesis.
