It is expressed in relatively high levels in the brain, particularly at synaptic sites. PIP5K type 1 gamma is activated by talin, and in turn phosphorylates phosphatidylinositol 4-phosphate to form phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate, the precursor to the second messenger phosphatidylinositol 3,4,5-trisphosphate. It indirectly influences vesicle transport, cell adhesion, and cell migration, among other processes. Defects in PIP5K type 1 gamma may contribute to lethal congenital arthrogryposis.
